Abstract:
The purpose of the invention is to obtain a particle separation device not being clogged even without requiring cleaning, having a long life, being reduced in pressure loss, and capable of increasing the amount of throughput and being reduced in size.
Micropillars (26) are arranged as a first row (2601) to an n-th row (2605): in the same row, the micropillars (26) are arranged at an equal distance (a) from each other; and each of the rows is arranged shifted by a distance (b) in a row direction with respect to one upstream row. A liquid flows between the micropillars (26). A voltage is applied to electrodes (2501, 2502) from a power supply (14) and an electric field is produced in the flow path. Since the micropillars (26) are an insulator, in the region where the distance is narrow, the density of lines of electric force becomes high and the field intensity becomes large, whereas, in the region where the distance is wide, the density of lines of electric force becomes low and the field intensity becomes small. Dielectric particles (30) receive a dielectrophoretic force by which the particles (30) are attracted from a place where the field intensity is large to a place where the field intensity is small, so that the particles (30) in the liquid are collected to one side of the flow path and are separated from the liquid.
