Abstract:
The present invention involves detecting a target pedestrian, who is a pedestrian within a prescribed distance from a road, and determining, on the basis of the gaze direction of the target pedestrian, whether the target pedestrian is viewing a destination that requires crossing and whether the target pedestrian has checked for traffic, i.e., any vehicles traveling on the road. If the results indicate that the target pedestrian carries out one action among the action of viewing a destination that requires crossing and the action of checking for traffic within a prescribed time after having carried out the other of the actions, the target pedestrian is detected to be a pre-crossing pedestrian who intends to cross the road. It is thus possible to precisely detect a pedestrian who is attempting to cross a road before the pedestrian actually begins to cross the road.
