This periphery monitoring device is provided with: an image acquiring unit which acquires captured image data output from an image capturing unit which is provided in a vehicle and which captures images of the periphery of the vehicle; a display device which displays images; an image converting unit which converts the captured image data into virtual image data from a plurality of virtual viewpoints, which are image capturing directions facing the vehicle; and a data control unit which sequentially displays the virtual image data on the display device in such a way that the virtual viewpoint moves from a first virtual viewpoint position facing from one side of the vehicle across to the opposite side of the vehicle, through a second virtual viewpoint position facing the vehicle from a region above the vehicle, to a third virtual viewpoint position facing from said opposite side of the vehicle across to said one side of the vehicle. The data control unit causes the virtual image data to rotate about the line of sight from the virtual viewpoint while the virtual image data are being displayed, in such a way that the virtual viewpoint passes through the second virtual viewpoint position.
