In a rotor iron core (6), magnet insertion holes (7a to 7c) having three permanent magnets embedded therein per pole are arranged substantially in a U-shape facing the outer circumferential surface of a rotor (5). A pair of holes (20a, 20b) formed symmetrically with reference to the center line between magnetic poles are provided for each of the magnetic poles in the vicinity of the outer circumference of the rotor iron core (6). When the number of the pole pairs of the magnetic poles formed by the permanent magnets is denoted by p and the number of the slots of a stator (3) is denoted by m, the pair of holes are provided at or near the positions where the sum of the amplitudes of the (m/p-1)- and (m/p+1)-th harmonic components of a no-load inductive voltage becomes minimal.
