Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2014/098512
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel use of fucosterol for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, and more particularly, to a pharmaceutical composition and functional health food comprising fucosterol, as an active ingredient, for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases. The fucosterol of the present invention may effectively increase the expression of ADAM10 which is α-secretase. Therefore, the composition of the present invention comprising the fucosterol, as an active ingredient, has excellent effects of inhibiting an amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide production, and thus can be effectively used in pharmaceutical drugs, functional food, and the like for preventing or treating (alleviating) neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Particularly, the fucosterol of the present invention is derived from a natural substance, is free of cytotoxicity, and has stability. Therefore, the composition of the present invention comprising the fucosterol, as an active ingredient, has advantages of being safe for long-term use without causing side effects to the human body.
