Abstract:

Provided is a phase difference film which satisfies the required quality of a phase difference film in that there are few film impurities or defects and there are few phase difference irregularities, and which is inexpensively obtained with good productivity by melt extrusion using polycarbonate and then orientation by stretching. (1) The viscosity-average molecular weight of the polycarbonate forming the film is within a range of 1.3 x 104 to 1.8 x 104; (2) the film in-plane phase difference (R) (589) as measured at a wavelength of 589 nm is 50 to 800 nm; (3) irregularities in the film in-plane phase difference (R) (589) are within a range of ±5 nm; (4) the average thickness of the film is 10 to 150 µm; and (5) the number of film defects that are 100 µm in size or larger is 2 defects/m2 or less.
