PIVOTING ELECTROMAGNETIC ACTUATOR AND INTEGRATED ACTUATOR AND FLUID FLOW CONTROL VALVE

An electromagnetic actuator is described which includes a stator which defines two pairs of poles (134, 140, 136, 138) and an elongate magnetisable armature (100) which is pivotable in a see-saw manner between two home positions in each of which it is in contact with two of the four poles. In doing so it passes through a mid position equidistant from the poles. A closed low reluctance path for magnetic flux is created by the stator and the armature when the latter is in contact with the stator poles in each home position. The low reluctance path includes at least one permanent magnet (112, 114) the flux from which creates a force of attraction between the armature and the home position poles with which it is in contact. The permanent magnet flux maintains the armature in either home position. An electromagnet (126, 128) is provided which when energised will alter the magnetic flux for the duration of a current pulse, so as to cause the armature to be repelled from the two poles it is in contact with and to be attracted to the other two. Resilient energy storage means (162, 164) is provided which has no effect on the armature in or near its mid position but which as the armature approaches the poles, resists the final movement of the armature towards the poles.
