A planar light emitting device is provided with: a light source; a sheet-shaped light guide, which is arranged in proximity to the aforementioned light source and which guides the light from the light source in the planar direction and has a plurality of light emitting regions and through-slits formed between each of these light emitting regions and penetrating the thickness direction of the light guide; a switch sheet arranged facing either the front or rear surface of the aforementioned light guide; and a light blocking layer, comprising a flange covering the edges of the aforementioned through-slits, a main body that is contiguous with the aforementioned flange and which covers at least one of the opposing inner wall surfaces of the aforementioned through-slits in order to form space in the inner section of said through-slits and a bottom section extending from the bottom of the main body.
