A planar lighting apparatus, comprising a plurality of streak-like projected parts (20) projected from the side end face of a light guide plate (12) and extending in the thickness direction of the light guide plate (12). Each of the streak-like projected parts (20) is formed of a pair of flat surfaces (22) and (24) symmetrically tilted in the lateral direction of the streak-like projected part (20) and a curved surface (26) smoothly connecting the tip sides of the pair of flat surfaces (22) and (24) to each other. The brightness of the apparatus in a wide angle direction is secured by a light beam (L3) refracted on the flat surfaces (22) and (24). Also, the brightness in the front direction of a spot light source (14) is secured by a light beam (L4) incident on a flat part (28) and going straight. Also, the brightness in a direction between the light beams (L3) and (L4) is secured by light beams (L1) and (L2) incident on the curved surface (26).
