A plasma display is provided with a drive circuit and a plasma display panel having multiple discharge cells. A protective layer of the plasma display panel is provided with a base layer and a metal oxide formed on the base layer. The metal oxide comprises pulverized coarse metal oxide particles, and the metal oxide and the coarse metal oxide particles have a photoluminescence peak in the wavelength range of 200nm to 300nm, and the peak of the metal oxide is 60% or greater but less than 100% the intensity of the peak of the coarse metal oxide particles. In an initialization period in a special initialization subfield, the drive circuit applies to each of multiple scan electrodes either a forced initialization waveform or a non-initialization waveform. In an initialization period in a selective initialization subfield, the drive circuit applies to each of the aforementioned multiple scan electrodes a selective initialization waveform. In the special initialization subfield in which a forced initialization waveform is applied and in the following special initialization subfield, the drive circuit applies a non-initialization waveform to the scan electrode adjacent to the scan electrode to which a forced initialization waveform is applied. Further, the drive circuit applies to the scan electrodes a forced initialization waveform only once in a field group.
