A POF (11) is tightly covered with a first covering material (30) and a second covering material (37) with a drawing machine (52) to produce a plastic optical cable (20). The POF (11) has a core (31) which comprises as a major component a brittle polymer having a tensile elongation at break of 15% or lower and a flexural strength of 20-65 MPa.
