Abstract:
The present invention provides a polarizer having excellent optical characteristics. The polarizer comprises: a transparent substrate (11) that is transparent with respect to light with a wavelength band in use; grating protrusions arrayed on the transparent substrate so as to extend in a given direction at a shorter pitch than the wavelength of the light in the wavelength band in use, the grating protrusions having a reflective layer (12) and a reflection control layer (13); and a groove (14A) provided between the grating protrusions with the width of the groove in a direction perpendicular to the given direction decreasing to zero in the depth direction. According to this configuration, transmittance characteristics and reflectance characteristics can be improved, resulting in excellent optical characteristics.
