Abstract:
Provided is a polarizing film having a high dichroic ratio. The disclosed polarizing film includes: a substrate; and a photo-alignment film and a light-absorbable anisotropic film which are laminated successively on the substrate in the aforementioned order. The light-absorbable anisotropic film is prepared by fixing the orientation of a dichroic dye composition in which the proportion of a liquid-crystalline non-coloring low-molecular compound is less than or equal to 30% by mass and that contains at least one type of nematic-liquid-crystalline dichroic azo dye. Also, the light-absorbable anisotropic film exhibits diffraction peaks resulting from the periodic structure in the direction perpendicular to the orientation axis as measured by X-ray diffractometry. The period represented by at least one of the diffraction peaks is from 3.0 to 15.0 Å, and the maximum values of the intensities of the diffraction peaks are not within the range of ±70° with respect to the direction which is normal to the film and which lies within a plane perpendicular to the orientation axis.
