Abstract:
Provided is a polarizing film having excellent optical characteristics. This polarizing film is constituted by a polyvinyl-alcohol-based resin film including iodine, the thickness thereof is 8 µm or less, the ratio (A550/A210) of the orthogonal absorbance A550 thereof at a wavelength of 550 nm and the orthogonal absorbance A210 thereof at a wavelength of 210 nm is 1.4-3.5, the ratio (A470/A600) of the orthogonal absorbance A470 thereof at a wavelength of 470 nm and the orthogonal absorbance A600 thereof at a wavelength of 600 nm is 0.7-2.00, and the orthogonal b value thereof is greater than -10 and no more than +10. A polarizing film of such description can be obtained by a manufacturing method that includes, for example, forming a polyvinyl-alcohol-based resin layer including an iodide or sodium chloride and a polyvinyl-alcohol-based resin on one side of a long thermoplastic resin substrate to form a layered body, and performing, in this order on the layered body, an in-air auxiliary drawing treatment, a dyeing treatment, an in-water drawing treatment, and a drying shrinkage treatment for shrinking the layered body by a factor of 2% or greater in the width direction by heating the layered body while conveying the layered body in the longitudinal direction thereof.
