Abstract:
Process for preparing bimodal polymers having improved cross-linking ability and radiation response by producing micro-blended polyethylene polymer composites of a lower molecular weight polyethylene polymer having little or no co-monomer content and a higher molecular weight polyethylene component having a co-monomer content ranging from 1 to 10 weight-% by polymerizing ethylene and an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst system which comprises a supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst and a single-site catalyst having high selectivity towards co-monomers. These ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene copolymers may be configured as arthroplastic implants, such as a hip, knee, shoulder, or finger articulating joint surface implant components or replacements.
