Abstract:
An unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer which comprises repeating units consisting of a residue of acrylic acid and ones consisting of a residue of glyoxal or formaldehyde and/or maleic acid and has a number-average molecular weight of 500 to 1,000,000; a crosslinked object obtained by crosslinking the polymer; processes for producing these; a builder comprising the polymer; a solid particulate or liquid detergent composition comprising the builder and a surfactant as the main components; a dispersant comprising the polymer; a process for producing a crosslinked polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid which comprises copolymerization and crosslinking; and the crosslinked object which combines high water absorption with biodegradability. The unsaturated carboxylic acid polymer is highly useful as a builder excellent in the ability to trap calcium ions and in biodegradability. The detergent composition dispersant comprises this builder and a surfactant as the main components.
