Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a liquid crystal composition which has excellent vertical alignment properties and excellent compatibility; and a liquid crystal display element which uses this liquid crystal composition. The present invention also addresses the problem of providing: a liquid crystal composition which has excellent storage stability and contains the spontaneous aligning additive, and which is capable of vertically aligning liquid crystal molecules without requiring a PI layer and without having alignment unevenness; and a liquid crystal display element which uses this liquid crystal composition. The present invention also addresses the problem of providing a liquid crystal display element wherein formed pretilt angles are stable for a long period of time. A liquid crystal composition according to the present invention contains a compound (i) which has a mesogenic group, a polar group Ki1, a polymerizable group, and Ri1. In cases where this liquid crystal composition is used, the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) is able to be adsorbed to substrates, by which the liquid crystal composition is sandwiched, and is able to be held in a state where the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the vertical direction. Consequently, a liquid crystal composition which uses a compound according to the present invention is capable of aligning liquid crystal molecules without having a PI layer.
