Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem in polar compound which has high chemical stability, the ability to align liquid crystal molecules, and high solubility in a liquid crystal composition, and which has a high voltage holding ratio when used in a liquid crystal display device. The problem is solved by a compound represented by formula (1). For example, R1 is an alkyl having 1-15 carbon atoms; rings A1 to A5 are each cyclohexylene or phenylene; Z1, Z4, and Z5 are each a single bond or alkylene having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; a, b, and c are each a number from 0 to 4; d and e are each a number from 1 to 4; P2 and P3 are each a polymerizable group; and Sp2 and Sp3 are each a single bond or alkylene having 1-10 carbon atoms.
