Abstract:

This fiber is mainly composed of structural units represented by general formula (I), (werein X represents 0, 1 or 2), with the average of X, X(Boolean not), being 1.0 to 2.0. According to the process of the present invention, a polyphenylene sulfone fiber having main structural units of formula (II), is produced from a polyphenylene sulfide fiber of a specific surface area of 0.4 m2/g or more and a degree of orientation of 70% or more by using an organic peroxide. The fiber of the present invention has remarkably excellent heat and chemical resistance.
