Abstract:

Disclosed is a polyvinyl alcohol resin (PVOH resin) composition which rarely undergoes discoloration during melt molding and can have a highly stable melt viscosity for a long term. The polyvinyl alcohol resin composition comprises: a polyvinyl alcohol resin which has a constituent unit represented by general formula (1) and shows an absorbance of 0.1 to 0.3 at 280 nm in ultraviolet absorption spectra when prepared into a 4-mass% aqueous solution; a carboxylic acid; and an alkali (earth) metal salt. When an aqueous solution of the polyvinyl alcohol resin composition is so prepared that the content of the polyvinyl alcohol resin in the aqueous solution is 4 mass%, the aqueous solution has a pH value of 5.5 to 7 at 20°C. [In the formula, R1, R2 and R3 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an organic group; X represents a single bond or a bonding chain; and R4, R5 and R6 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an organic group.]
