Abstract:
This porous composite (1) comprises a porous substrate (2) and a porous trapping layer (3) that is provided to a trapping surface (for example, the inside surface of a first cell (231)) of the substrate (2). The trapping layer (3) includes catalyst particles that are a rare earth oxide or a transition metal oxide and are disposed inside pores in the trapping surface of the substrate (2). Of the trapping surface, the total area of a covered region that is covered by the trapping layer (3) is no more than 60% of the area of the entire trapping surface. The present invention can thereby achieve a suitable trapping efficiency for particulate matter while also suppressing an increase in pressure loss in the porous composite (1). In addition, the catalyst particles of the trapping layer (3) can promote oxidation of the trapped particulate matter, and can lower the combustion initiation temperature of said particulate matter.
