A position detection device capable of detecting changes in the relative position of an object (92, 95) to be detected relative to a reference (90), wherein the position detection device is provided with a base part (18) incapable of relative motion relative to the reference, tracking parts (19, 29, 34, 39, 48, 49, 57, 58, 59, 67, 68, 69, 79) deformably or movably provided so as to track the relative movement of the object to be detected relative to the reference, an extendable and contractible member (17), and a thermal flux detector (10). The extendable and contractible member is provided between the base part and the tracking parts, is formed from a material capable of extending and contracting in accordance with the deformation or movement of the tracking parts, generates heat upon contracting, and absorbs heat upon extending. The thermal flux detector is provided such that heat from the extendable and contractible member is transmitted to the thermal flux detector, the thermal flux detector being capable of detecting the thermal flux that is the flow of heat between the interior and the exterior of the extendable and contractible member.
