Abstract:
In a self-contained position detector for an automobile which integrates a driving distance and a direction change quantity at every predetermined timing and detects the present position on any of the roads in a road map stored in memory based on the integration data according to the present invention, a position detection system comprises the steps of calculating the present position data from the integration data, calculating a first limit error (E1) and a second limit error (E2) in the position data which are determined based on an error in the integration data and an error in the road map, storing all the positions on the roads existing inside the range of the first limit error (E1) as estimated positions, calculating coefficients of correlation between the stored estimated positions and each load, selecting a correlation coefficient providing a minimum error for a road and outputting an estimated position corresponding to the selected correlation coefficient as the present position.
