Provided is a position determination system that determines the position of a mobile terminal in relation to a vehicle by wirelessly communicating with the mobile terminal using 1 GHz or higher radio waves. The position determination system comprises: an external vehicle communication device (12β, 12L, 12M, 12N) that is installed on the vehicle on an external face serving as the side face or the back face and that has an antenna (121) for receiving wireless signals transmitted from a mobile terminal; and a position determination unit (F4) that, on the basis of the reception state of the wireless signal at the external vehicle communication device from the mobile terminal, determines whether the mobile terminal is present in an outdoor operation area, which is a region outside of the vehicle within a prescribed operation distance from the vehicle. The antenna is configured to be able to radiate primary polarized waves in a prescribed direction and to radiate cross polarized waves in a direction orthogonal to the radiation direction of the primary polarized waves. The external vehicle communication device is installed in an orientation to radiate the primary polarized waves in the direction along the external face on which the external vehicle communication device is mounted and to radiate the cross polarized waves in the direction perpendicular to the external face.
