Abstract:
[Problem] To ensure that an accurate assist control is performed even if there is variation in the attachment angle of a power assist device to a bicycle. [Solution] This power assist device for a bicycle includes: a housing 52 that is attached to a frame 18 of a bicycle 10; an electric motor 58 that is provided to the housing 52; rotating members (64, 72) that are rotatably supported by the housing, rotatingly driven by the electric motor 58, and connected in a torque transmission relationship to a crank shaft 24 or a crank arm 26 of the bicycle 10; a rotation angle sensor 124 that is provided to the housing 52, and detects the rotation angle of the electric motor 58 or the rotating members (64, 72); and a control device 120 that controls the operation of the electric motor 58 by referencing the rotation angle detected by the rotation angle sensor 124. The power assist device further has an inclination angle detection device 128 that is provided to the housing 52, and detects the inclination angle relative to the direction of gravity. The control device 120 includes a calibration processing unit 148 that sets the absolute angle of the rotation angle sensor 124 on the basis of an output signal of the inclination angle detection device 128.
