Abstract:
A power transmission shaft, wherein the static twisting strength of a flat smooth section of the shaft is improved. A power transmission shaft has torque transmission teeth (2) formed on that portion of the outer peripheral surface of the shaft which is on the end side, and also has a flat smooth section (3) formed on that portion of the outer peripheral surface of the shaft which is adjacent to the torque transmission teeth (2) and having a stepwise reduced diameter. The ratio expressed by (the minimum diameter (D3min) of the flat smooth section (3))/(the minimum diameter (D2min) of the torque transmission teeth section (2)) is set to be not less than 0.9 but not more than 1.02. Also, the torque transmission teeth section (2) and the flat surface section (3) are subjected to heat treatment to form a heat-treated hardened layer (4). The heat-treated hardened layer (4) is formed such that the depth of the layer gradually increases from the torque transmission teeth section (2) side to the flat smooth section (3) side. At least that portion of the heat-treated hardened layer (4) which is in a smallest-diameter section (3a) of the flat smooth section (3) is totally hardened from the surface of the portion up to the axis (X).
