A power unit for an electric vehicle, comprising: an electric motor having an output shaft; a power transmitting mechanism; a controller for controlling the electric motor; and a case which houses the electric motor, the power transmitting mechanism, and the controller and which has a support section supported so that the support section can pivot relative to the vehicle body. The case includes a wall section extending in the front-rear direction. The support section is disposed on one of the surfaces of the left side and the right side of the wall section at a position on one end of the wall section in the front-rear direction. In the power transmitting mechanism, an axle is disposed on the one of the surfaces of the left side and the right side of the wall section at a position on the other end of the wall section in the front-rear direction. The controller is affixed to the other of the surfaces of the left side and the right side of the wall section at the same position as at least a part of the support section in the front-rear direction. The output shaft of the electric motor is disposed between the controller and the axle in the front-rear direction of the wall section.
