PREFORMED POCKET SQUARE APPARATUS WITH INTERCHANGEABLE

DECORATIVE TOPS

RELATED APPLICATIONS

[001] This Application claims the benefit of U. S. Provisional Application No.

62/114,935, filed February 11, 2015, and 62/171,261, filed June 5 th , 2015, each of which is incorporated by reference herein in their entirety.

BACKGROUND

[002] The present invention relates to a method for consistent, quick, and easy display and interchange of pocket squares/handkerchiefs from the pocket of a suit, jacket, dress, or any other clothing apparel to create a stylish appearance.

[003] The current practice of wearing a pocket square requires folding a square, or otherwise, shaped cloth and inserting it into the breast pocket of a man's suit coat. Pocket squares are also displayed from jackets, dresses, or any other pocket of a garment. As used herein, the term "pocket" will generally refer to any enclosure used to display a handkerchief from an article of clothing. The pocket square should visibly protrude from the pocket for all to see. The experience of wearing a pocket square should provide the wearer with increased confidence and style.

[004] Several fundamental problems exist with conventional folded pocket squares:

[005] The first problem requires the user to know how to properly fold the square and properly insert it into the pocket. This step is time consuming and frustrating because the neatly folded square may not fit the first time (too big or small) and have to be re-folded or the fold gets disrupted during insertion, which requires refolding. Additionally, an improperly folded square could create an unsightly bulge in the pocket of the garment from which it is displayed.

[006] The second problem is once a pocket square is properly folded and placed into a suit pocket, it will typically move throughout the day which results in it not being visible or, worse, it becomes disheveled which can impact the confidence of the wearer. Also when the user desires to quickly swap out different colors and styles to go with the wearer's outfit, each change of the pocket square requires another folding process.

[007] Various methods have previously been proposed to solve the problems associated with conventional pocket squares. The most common solution features a device that cradles a pre- folded pocket square or pre-sewn, pre-folded pocket square portion into an envelope or pouch that can be inserted into the pocket. A problem with current cradle-type solutions that hold a full size square is that inserting the pocket square into the pocket can be difficult and time consuming and continues to require the user to fold the square or remove the cradling or support device from the pocket in order to interchange the displayed pocket square.

Solutions that cradle pre-folded pocket squares require careful and skillful folding to achieve the desired look and can also leave an unsightly bulge in the users pocket and require the user to fully insert the cradled pocket square into the pocket for proper display.

[008] Other solutions feature pre-sewn, pre-folded pocket squares permanently or temporarily fixed onto, within, or over a mounting device made for easy insertion into the pocket. The mounting devices may enable the proper display of the pocket square but require the user to fully insert the pocket square device into the pocket, which can be time consuming and frustrating as not all pockets are of equal depth. Also because pockets have varying depths, some solutions contain adjustment features for enabling the proper height of the pocket square. However, if the user desires to switch pocket squares between garments he/she may need to readjust the depth of these devices. Also many of these solutions cannot be laundered as they frequently contain fibrous materials. Additionally, when the aforementioned solutions are viewed outside of the pocket it is obvious to others that the pocket square is of the non-conventional kind as most are pre-folded and/or pre-sewn and have obvious features used for insertion or centering in the pocket.

[009] Despite all prior attempts, there remains a need in the art for a solution with an ability to quickly and easily swap out the displayed pocket square while using a common and fashionable base that affords height adjustments for various sized pockets. Further, there exists a need in the art for a quickly interchangeable pocket square system with non-obvious attachment means so as to have a more conventional look when the pocket square is viewed outside of the pocket. There also exists a need in the art for an attractive and useful base component that allows for infinite adjustment and space for discreet storage of other items. SUMMARY

[0010] The present invention is a preformed pocket square system that enables precise placement of a pocket square into the top of a pocket with minimal manipulation by the user while maintaining its folded shape and appearance throughout the day. The pocket square system is comprised of at least two primary assemblies: a) a decorative top assembly and b) a base assembly. The base assembly is a fashionable adjustable device intended for insertion into a suitable pocket, for example a breast pocket, of a coat or any other garment. Features of the base assembly provide for a desired amount of reveal for the decorative top assembly. The base assembly is not intended to be visible outside of the pocket when worn but is aesthetic when viewed outside of the users pocket. The base assembly features a mounting slider that is intended to temporarily mate to the decorative top assembly. The decorative top assembly detachably mates to the base assembly such that the decorative top assembly may be situated with a bottom portion minimally inserted into the pocket and the remaining upper portion visible outside of the pocket for intended viewing.

[0011] In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, the base assembly may remain in the breast pocket indefinitely if the user desires, as it is not visible and would not hinder the wearer of the jacket/suit coat. Furthermore, the base assembly is slim fitting in the pocket, eliminating any unsightly bulge in the pocket. The width of said base assembly may be fixed. In accordance with yet other aspects of the present disclosure, the base assembly may be adjustable.

[0012] The base assembly comprises at least two components which cooperate to form an infinitely adjustable base from which the decorative top assembly can be detachably mounted for aesthetic display. The base assembly is formed with an aesthetic slide holder that is typically leather but can be made from a variety of materials, including but not limited to artificial leather, wood, cloth, plastic, or any other suitable material that is able to be cut and fastened together to form a pouch for holding the second component of the base assembly. The second component of the base assembly is referred to as the mounting slider and contains an ergonomic grasping feature for quick and easy adjustment of the mounting slider. The grasping feature may also contain a cavity near the top for mounting or housing a magnet or metallic component that facilitates a magnetic connection to the decorative top assembly. The mounting slider is permanently retained in the bottom assembly with one or more fasteners mounted in the slide holder that prevents complete separation of the two components. The fasteners interact with through slots in the mounting slider so as to allow for infinite adjustment to a predetermined position and provide ample friction to resist movement throughout the day. The slide holder of the base assembly could be made to define any shape but is typically square with radius edges to enable quick and easy insertion into the pocket of the user. The base assembly also provides ample space for logos, branding, or personalization if so desired by the user. The base assembly may also contain horizontal slots on one or both faces of the slide holder forming storage for which to discretely store items such as money, credit cards, or other articles the user wishes to carry.

[0013] The decorative top assembly of the system may be manufactured in a plurality of styles and designs. In accordance with aspects of the present disclosure, each top assembly is comprised of at least two fundamental components, an intemal mounting plate and a pre- sewn cloth portion intended to look like a folded pocket square. The intemal mounting plate provides a form for which the pocket square can be shaped and sewn upon as well as a location for a magnet or metallic mounting component to reside that supports the temporary connection of the pocket square to the base assembly. The internal mounting plate is intended to be permanently secured within the pre-sewn cloth and not removable by the user. The magnets or metallic components therein are not visible to the user and the magnetic attraction is strong enough to firmly secure the decorative top assembly to the bottom assembly through the pocket square cloth.

[0014] In accordance with other aspects of the present disclosure, the base assembly functionality may be permanently incorporated into the pocket of a suit, jacket, dress or any other garment by sewing a magnet or metallic component into a pocket cavity at time of garment manufacture. The magnet or metallic mounting component shall then couple to the decorative top assembly near the top edge of the pocket so as to allow a proper amount of reveal for the decorative top assembly from the pocket. The magnet or metallic cavity inside the garment pocket shall mount as a foldable flap internal to the pocket and, when not engaged, rotate out of the way when other uses for the pocket are needed.
