The purpose of the present invention is to provide both a press felt for papermaking which exhibits excellent durability and high operating efficiency in changing and which has an optimized resin layer with precisely controlled distribution of a resin, and a process for the production of a press felt for papermaking. Disclosed is a press felt (20) for papermaking which is provided with both a base fabric layer (21) and a surface batting layer (22) disposed on the papermaking-surface side thereof, wherein the surface batting layer (22) contains a thermoplastic resin (28) which is dispersed therein in a solid state through melt-dispersion and solidification steps, said thermoplastic resin (28) exhibiting a viscosity of 100 to 7,000 Pa∙s when fluidized at a temperature ranging from the melting point to lower than 180 °C. Also disclosed is a process for the production of a press felt for papermaking, which comprises: a laminating step of preparing a laminate (10) wherein a raw material (11) for a base fabric layer, a raw material (12b) for a first batting layer, a resin layer (15) consisting of a thermoplastic resin, and a raw material (12a) for a second batting layer are entangled with each other in this order; and a dispersing step of heat-melting the thermoplastic resin, dispersing the resulting thermoplastic resin in a raw material (12) for a batting layer, and solidifying the dispersed thermoplastic resin.
