After applying ink in a previously determined pattern on the plate surface of a printing plate, a printing apparatus transfers the patterned ink onto a substrate. The printing apparatus comprises: an image-printing unit for applying ink on the plate surface of the printing plate; a plate surface-observing unit for acquiring information on the plate surface of the inked printing plate; a storage unit in which information on a reference form that serves as a reference for the plate surface of the inked printing plate is stored; and an assessment unit for comparing the information on the reference form stored in the storage unit with the information on the plate surface of the inked printing plate obtained by the plate surface-observing unit and assessing whether the plate surface of the inked printing plate is within a previously determined range of the reference form.
