A printing apparatus that prevents positional deviations or shifting of printed characters when the printing operation is suspended and restarted as a result of opening and closing of a dust cover. When the dust cover is opened during the printing operation of a plotter, the printing apparatus interrupts the printing operation (ink droplet ejection) performed by a print head (19) in response to an output from a switch (43) and at the same time stores the current position of a carriage (17) in memory. Next, the apparatus suspends the carriage driving performed by a drive controller (65) in response to an output from a second switch (44). This suspends the printing operation before the carriage speed slows down, thereby preventing disturbance of the printed image due to the reduced speed of the carriage. Then, when the dust cover is closed, the printing operation is resumed at the carriage position previously stored in memory. Further, the temperature of the head during suspension is stored in memory and, when the head cover is closed, the head temperature is returned to the stored temperature before resuming the printing operation to prevent a change in the tint.
