Title:
PROCEDURE FOR SPRAY PAINTING AS WELL AS A DEVICE TO ACCOMPLISH THE PROCEDURE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1983/004380
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Procedure at spray painting of a surface, which is to be spray painted only partly and inside a border line. Along the border line a projecting edging is applied along which the edge area of the spray jet used for the painting is directed, so that the fine part of the spraying particles of paint hit the surface inside the area which is hidden by the edging. Thereby a gradual diluting of the paint along the border line is accomplished. The edging in a manner known per se is formed of a piece of tape (2) which in the form of a roll of a piece of tape with glue on one side in a holder (10, 11) from which the piece of tape can be unwound through a nozzle which at one side of the piece of tape forms one in height and width diminishing outlet, the opening of which has a height which is smaller than the width of the piece of tape. One arranges the piece of tape in such a way in the nozzle, that its edge part is folded by the in height diminishing nozzel with its side of glue against the inside place side with the glue of a piece of tape, so that the piece of tape runs along the edge part which is double folded and lacks hereby a surface free of glue while its other edge part shows such a surface of glue. When painting one fastens the end of a piece of tape somewhere along the border line on the surface with a folded over part of a piece of tape directed inwards against the surface, which is about to be spray painted and pulls the tape holder along the border line so that the glue covered side of the tape sticks on the surface while the double folded edge area forms said projecting edging. The invention is also intended for a device for accomplishing the procedure.

Description:
Title :

Procedure for spray painting as well as a device to accomplish the procedure

Technical field:

The present invention refers to a procedure for spray painting and a device to accomplish the procedure .

Background:

When spray painting one wishes sometimes to repaint a part of an earlier painted surface in such a way that the border between the newly painted and the earlier painted surface is as invisible as possible. This can for example be desirable when one has minor dam¬ ages on a larger painted surfaces which one does not want to repaint entirely. At such a repainting it is already known to separate the area, which is to be repainted, with an edging which is projecting from the surface. When spray painting in such a way that the border area of the jet encounters the projecting edging one gets such a turning of the outermost jets that the amount of paint after a while gets diluted, in this way no sharp transition is obtained. The pro¬ cedure is commonly called shade painting.

Technical problem:

However, the separating means used hitherto when shade pain¬ ting are very primitive. Thus it is common that one by hand very carefully applies a tape at one of the edges while at the same time one holds the other edge upright and folds it out to form a projec¬ ting edging. This way is very time consuming and also not very re¬ liable.

The solution :

At the present invention the edging is formed for masking of a piece of tape which in the shape of a roll of a piece of tape with glue on one side and no glue on the other side is put in the holder from which a piece of tape can be wound through a nozzle. This nozzle forms at the one side of the tape one in height and width diminishing outlet, the opening of which has a height which i ' s smal¬ ler, than the width of the tape . One arranges the piece of tape

1

in the nozzle in such a way that its edge is folded by that in height diminishing nozzle with its side of glue against the side of glue of the piece of tape which is inside, so that the piece of tape runs with an edge which is folded double and hereby lacks a side free of glue while its other edge portion shows such a surface of glue. One attaches the end of the piece of tape somewhere along the border¬ line on the surface with the folded part of the piece of tape direc¬ ted inwards against the area which is to be spray painted and pulls the tape holder along the border line so that the side of the tape which is glued sticks along the same on the surface while the edge area which is folded double forms a projecting edging.

Advantages :

Through the present invention a procedure is achieved at which a masking for shade painting can be formed in a very fast way and with reliable result.

Through the invention a device is also accomplished with which the masking can be performed.

Brief description of the drawings:

On the enclosed drawings an embodiment of the invention is shown. Fig. 1 shows the first half of the tape holder; Fig. 2 shows the other half; Fig. 3 shows a section of a holder put together along the line III-III in Fig. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 shows a tape in cross section accomplished by means of the holder; and Fig. 5 shows the tape in a fixed manner; while Fig. 6 finally shows the tape holder in a per¬ spective. •

Best mode of carrying out the invention:

In Fig. 5 a surface 1 is shown on which a tape holder 2 is affixed. On one side 3 of the tape there is glue. The set of glue is however only accessible at one of the edge areas of the tape. The opposite edge area 4 is folded over and rests with its side of glue against the side of glue in the middle area of the tape. Seen from a side which is turned against the surface 1 it is thus apparent that about half of the tape has a surface of glue while the other half has a side of tape which is not covered with glue, on which an edge

'BU EA

area thus is folded over. The opposite side consists completely of a non-glue covered side .

When affixing the tape against the surface 1 only the edge area which shows a surface of glue sticks to the surface 1 while the other edge area will stand diagonally outwards from the surface. As this edge area does not show any tendency to stick to the surface 1 it can be folded to a desired angle by means of pulling the finger along the same.

In Fig. 5 it is suggested with a broken line how a jet from a spray painting unit which is directed against the surface 1 with its edge area will encounter the part of a tape 2 which is bent outwards. Hereby individual particles of the paint are diverted so that the paint cover is diluted under a piece of tape which is bent upwards from the surface. Hereby the desired shading effect is accomplished. The specially arranged tape which is shown in Fig. 4 with its double folded area 4 and its area of glue 3, is attained from a com¬ mon flat tape with one complete surface of glue and one non-glue surface. The folding of the edge area 4 is accomplished by means of pulling out the tape through a special shaped nozzle to a tape hol¬ der, which is shown in Fig. 1, 2 and 3.

According to the figures the tape holder shows a core 5 which is perforated of a hole 6 and an outer wall 7. The core 5 and the outer wall 7 start from two side walls 8 and 9, which each belong to a half 10 respectively 11 shown in Fig. 1 respectively 2 to the tape holder. Half of the outer wall 7 belongs thereby to one of the halves and the other part of the other wall belongs to the other half . The core 5 has on the other hand about the same height as the tape hol¬ der in its entirety but the cores of the two halves of the holder can telescopically be pushed into each other through which a fit between them keeps the two halves of the holder 10 and 11 together. This is shown in Fig . 3.

The nozzle mentioned through which the tape is pulled out, consists of two walls 12 and 13, between which a slot 14, which dwindles outwards , is formed . The wall 12 extends only to half of the height of the distance between the side walls 8 and 9 while it. is only occurring on the half of the holder 11 while the other wall 13 corresponds to an opposite wall 15 on the half of the holder 10,

area thus is folded over. The opposite side consists completely of a non-glue covered side.

Half of the outer wall 7 belongs thereby to one of the halves and the other part of the other wall belongs to the other half. The core 5 has on the other hand about the same height as the tape hol¬ der in its entirety but the cores of the two halves of the holder can telescopically be pushed into each other through w τ hich a fit between them keeps the two halves of the holder 10 and 11 together. This is shown in Fig ' . 3.

The nozzle mentioned through which the tape is pulled out, consists of two w τ alls 12 and 13, between which a slot 14, which dwindles outwards, is formed. The wall 12 extends only to half of the height of the distance between the side walls 8 and 9 while it is only occurring on the half of the holder 11 while the other wall 13 corresponds to an opposite wall 15 on the half of the holder 10, ,

which meets the same, so that they together form a wall between the side walls 8 and 9. The slot 14 shows a diagonal bottom 16 (see Fig. 3) , which makes the depth of the slot dwindle against the nar¬ rower part. At the inner wider end of the slot the end extends down against the side wall 9 while its outer, slimmer end has diminished its depth to about half . This means that at the narrow outlet of the slot the height between its bottom and the opposite side wall 8 is about 3/4 of the total distance between the side walls 8 and 9.

As indicated by broken dotted lines a tape roll 17 is to be put around the core 5 so that its extending strip 18 extends into the slot 14. The roll of the tape has about the same width as the dis¬ tance- between the side walls 8 and 9 and to be able to pass the slot 14 its side edge must therefore gradually be bent, so that it comes • out in the mentioned double folded edge area 4. Since the height in the slot thus diminishes at the same time as its bottom 16 is rounded a regular tape will, if it has been put in with its edge part folded at the pulling extend from the roll and gradually be double folded so that it always comes out as shown in Fig. 4.

• By fixing the end of a tape on the surface as well as pulling the tape along the surface one gets a fastening of the tape in such a way as is shown in Fig. 5. By simply pulling the tape along the border line and along the surface one gets the intended shade mas¬ king without further efforts.
