Method and device for purifying water contaminated with at least one type of organic compound by irradiating the water with ultraviolet light. The method employs ultraviolet light having a first wavelength range comprising at least a wavelength of about 185 and 254 nanometer as well as a second wavelength range of at least 170 - 400 nanometer.
