Abstract:

A process for preparing economically and efficiently 2-methylene-3-methylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptane, 2,3-dimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene, and so on, which are useful as raw materials in producing base oils for traction drive fluids to be used as lubricating oils for traction drive units, which process comprises reacting one or more C¿3-4? noncyclic olefins with cyclopentadiene to form one or more bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives and isomerizing the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives in the presence of an isomerization catalyst to form one or more bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane derivatives.
