Abstract:
A process for producing 1,2-ethanediol derivatives in high yields, which comprises esterifying an 'alpha'-hydroxy acid derivative to synthesize an 'alpha'-hydroxy acid ester derivative and reducing the obtained ester derivative in the same reactor in the presence of a sodium borohydride compound in a protic solvent or an aqueous aprotic polar solvent.
