Abstract:

A process for producing an aliphatic polyester having a weight-average molecular weight of 50,000 to 1,000,000, characterized by subjecting a crystallized aliphatic polyester prepolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 2,000 to 100,000 and obtained from an aliphatic dihydric alcohol and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to solid-phase polymerization in the presence of a volatile catalyst. In the process, the catalyst can be removed simultaneously with and/or after the solid-phase polymerization while maintaining the same reaction system. The production process can hence be rationalized as compared with conventional techniques necessitating a troublesome step for catalyst removal. Consequently, the high-molecular aliphatic polyester obtained by the process is equal in stability to aliphatic polyesters obtained through conventional catalyst removal.
