Abstract:

A process for the microbial production of a plural number of carotenoid compounds wherein the ratio of the carotenoid compounds thus formed is varied. The ratio of the carotenoid compounds thus formed (astaxanthin, adonixanthin, beta -carotene, echinenone, canthaxanthin, zeaxanthin, beta -cryptoxanthin, 3-hydroxyechinenone, adonirubin, etc.) is varied by controlling the concentration of oxygen dissolved in a liquid culture medium during the culture.
