A process for producing a mononitrated aromatic ether compound represented by the general formula (2) (2) (wherein Z is oxygen, etc.; X is hydrogen, etc.; and R?1¿ and R?2¿ may be the same or different and each is optionally substituted alkyl, etc.), characterized by reacting an aromatic ether compound represented by the general formula (1) (1) (wherein Z, X, R?1¿, and R?2¿ are the same as defined above) with 1 to 2 mol of nitric acid per mol of the aromatic ether compound in an organic solvent in the presence of sulfuric acid.
