Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING 5−ALKYL−&gammad −BUTYROLACTONE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2003/051856
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A process for producing a 5−alkyl−&gammad −butyrolactone represented by the following general formula (2): (2) wherein n is an integer of 4 or above&semi which comprises isomerizing a lactone represented by the following general formula (1): (1) wherein n is an integer of 4 or above&semi by bringing into contact with at least one acid selected from among sulfuric acid, sulfonic acid, an ion exchange resin having sulfonate group and heteropolyacid at 0 to 230°C. If needed, the thus obtained 5−alkyl−&gammad −butyrolactone is brought into contact with at least one carbonate selected form among alkali metal carbonates and alkaline earth metal carbonates. Thus, a 5−alkyl−&gammad −butyrolactone can be obtained at a relatively high yield with the use of a less expensive acid or a small amount of an acid without resort to any special reaction equipment. By treating the thus obtained 5−alkyl−&gammad −butyrolactone with the carbonate as described above, 5−alkyl−&gammad −butyrolactone with lessened odor can be obtained.
