Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING 4'−BROMOMETHYL−2−CYANOBIPHENYL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2003/106406
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A process for producing 4'−bromomethyl−2−cyanobiphenyl, characterized by reacting 4'−methyl−2−cyanobiphenyl with bromine in the presence of a free−radical initiator and an oxidizing agent. By the process, the hydrogen bromide which generates as a by−product with the progress of bromination can be converted to bromine by the action of the oxidizing agent. Troubles such as reaction inhibition by hydrogen bromide and discoloration caused by bromine can be avoided. Thus, 4'−bromomethyl−2−cyanobiphenyl, which is useful as a material for medicines, can be industrially advantageously produced.
