Disclosed is a process for producing a coated article having excellent corrosion resistance, wherein the coated article is produced by coating the surface of a base material for the article with a hard coating film composed of at least two layers by a physical deposition method. The process comprises a step of coating the surface of the base material with a first hard coating film and a step of coating the surface of the first hard coating film with a second hard coating film. The process additionally comprises, prior to the step of coating with the second hard coating film, a step of polishing the surface of the first hard coating film until the calculated average roughness (Ra) becomes 0.05 μm or less and the largest height (Rz) becomes 1.00 μm or less.
