Title:
PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF DAMPING METAL AND DAMPING METAL PRODUCED THEREBY
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2010/005092
Kind Code:
A9
Abstract:
A process for the production of a damping metal by utilizing a current general-purpose metal material.  The process can give a damping metal which ensures sufficient corrosion resistance and a sufficient mechanical lifetime and exerts high damping characteristics. An alloy steel containing at least 8wt% of chromium is used as base metal.  Carbon is made to penetrate the base metal from the surface thereof, whereby a carbon-rich layer having a higher carbon concentration than that of the deep portion is formed on the surface to make a difference in the sensitivity to sensitization between the surface layer and the deep portion.  The resulting alloy steel is kept under such heating conditions as to sensitize the surface layer and not to sensitize the deep portion, whereby a sensitized layer is formed on the surface and intergranular corrosion is made to occur at the grain boundaries in the sensitized layer.  Thus, a damping-structure layer is formed on the surface, while the structure of the deep portion is kept in such a state that substantially no chromium carbide is precipitated at grain boundaries.
