Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for production of an optically active α-ionone with good yield and enantiomeric excess, at a low cost, with good workability and in a short process. Also disclosed is a fragrance composition comprising an optically active α-ionone produced by the process. A process for production of an optically active α-ionone comprising the steps of reacting an α-ionone in the form of a mixture of optical isomers with an esterifying agent to yield an α-ionone enol ester and hydrolyzing the α-ionone enol ester; a process for production of an optically active α-ionone comprising the steps of subjecting an α-ionone in the form of a mixture of optical isomers to asymmetric reduction to yield an optically active α-ionole, reacting the optically active α-ionole with an esterifying agent to yield an optically active α-ionole ester, optionally purifying the an optically active α-ionole ester, and hydrolyzing and oxidizing the optically active α-ionole ester; and a fragrance composition comprising an optically active α-ionone produced by the process.
