Abstract:
A production method for modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer particles that mixes: a mixed medium including an unsaturated carboxylic acid and an acid catalyst; and vinyl alcohol-based polymer particles. The production method obtains modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer particles that include a vinyl ester unit indicated by formula (2), have a vinyl alcohol monomer unit content of 95–99.99 mol% relative to the total constituent units, and have an average particle diameter of 50–2,000 μm, by: mixing the mixed medium and the vinyl alcohol-based polymer particles; and reacting the unsaturated carboxylic acid and the vinyl alcohol-based polymer. This production method is simple and extremely economical because it does not require a step in which a polymer is precipitated in a large amount of poor solvent, due to not having the issue of residual sulfur from a liquid medium, etc., used during the reaction and also due to the vinyl alcohol-based polymer particles being able to retain their particle shape when modified.
