Abstract:
The present invention provides an industrial production method for a zero azimuthal anchoring film, and an excellent liquid crystal display element and liquid crystal display element production method which employ the aforementioned method. Provided is a production method for a zero azimuthal anchoring film that includes a step for bringing a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal and a radical-polymerizable compound having a structure represented by formula (1) into contact with a radical generating film and, with the composition in this state, applying sufficient energy to cause the polymerization of the radical-polymerizable compound. Also provided is a method for creating a functional film that includes a step for preparing a cell in which a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal and a radical-polymerizable compound having a structure represented by formula (1) is sandwiched between a first substrate having a radical generating film and a second substrate not having a radical generating film, and a step for applying, to the cell, sufficient energy to cause the polymerization of the radical-polymerizable compound. In formula (1), Ra and Rb each independently represent a C2–8 linear alkyl group, and E represents a bonding group selected from among a single bond, -O-, -NRc-, -S-, an ester bond, and an amide bond. Rc represents a hydrogen atom or a C1–4 alkyl group.
