Abstract:
Initially, the character input screen of a touch panel 1 displays only a first belt-like key area (31) in which the representative characters of a plurality of character groups are arranged in a row, each character group having one representative character assigned thereto. When a touch point is detected in this area (31), a second belt-like key area (32) is displayed in which the characters of a group represented by the character displayed at the detection position are arranged in a row. When movement of the touch point from the first belt-like key area (31) to the second belt-like key area (32) is detected, a belt-like candidate area (41) is displayed in which candidate character strings that match the character displayed at the moved position are displayed in a row. The areas (31, 32, 41) are sequentially arranged in the same orientation and along the width direction. When the touch point disappears after having moved from the second belt-like key area (32) to the belt-like candidate area (41), the candidate character string displayed at the disappearance position is selected as the input character string.
