Provided are a projection display device and projection control method with which conditions in the direction of progress can be grasped accurately even when the line of sight of a driver changes in a complicated manner. This projection display device is provided with: a projection display unit that includes a light source (41r, 41g, 41b), a light modulation element 44 that spatially modulates the light emitted from the light source, and a projection unit 50 that uses the light spatially modulated by the light modulation element as projection light which is projected on a projection surface 2 that is mounted to a vehicle; a sightline detection unit 70 that detects the line of sight of the driver of the vehicle; and a system control unit 60 that stops projection of the projection light on the projection surface 2 by the projection display unit when the line of sight detected by the sightline detection unit 70 is outside the projection surface 2, and, when it is determined that the line of sight has moved inside the projection surface 2 from outside the projection surface 2, restarts projection of the projection light on the projection surface 2 by the projection display unit after a first period of time has elapsed from the moment of said determination.
