A projection display device comprises: an illumination optical system including one or a plurality of light sources; a reflection type liquid crystal element for generating image light by modulating the light from the illumination optical system on the basis of an input image signal; a polarization beam splitter arranged on the optical path between the illumination optical system and the reflection type liquid crystal element; a polarization compensation element which is arranged on the optical path between the polarization beam splitter and the reflection type liquid crystal element, and introduces a phase difference to the incident light to change the polarization state thereof; and a projection optical system for projecting image light incident through the optical path passing the polarization compensation element and the polarization beam splitter after being generated by the reflection type liquid crystal element. The polarization compensation element has a first surface and a second surface facing each other along the optical axis, and creates phase differences of mutually opposite polarities and substantially equivalent absolute values for the light that is input from the first surface and light that is input from the second surface.
