This projection optical system (50) comprises: a projection substrate (100) for projecting image light to a second surface on a reverse side from a first surface while transmitting at least a portion of light incident from the first surface to the second surface, the projection substrate (100) having an optical waveguide part (200); and a polarization reduction plate (310) that is provided to the optical waveguide part (200) via an air layer on the first surface side of the projection substrate (100), and covers at least a portion of the optical waveguide part (200) and reduces light in a polarization direction of image light that leaks from the first surface, the optical waveguide part (200) guiding at least a portion of projection light for projecting the image light, and emitting the projection light as image light from the second surface.
