A projection system, comprising a first light source, a second light source, a color gamut determining module, a light source controller, and a light modulating device. The first light source is used for emitting primary light for modulating an image, the primary light being capable of modulating the image within a first color gamut range; the second light source is used for emitting supplementary light for widening the color gamut of at least one type of light in the primary light emitted by the first light source; the color gamut determining module is used for receiving image data, determining the color gamut range of an image to be displayed according to the image data, and outputting a control signal according to the color gamut range; the light source controller is used for receiving the control signal, and controlling the on and off of the first light source and the second light source according to the control signal, so that the color gamut range capable of being modulated of the light emitted by the first light source and the second light source meets the color gamut range of the image to be displayed; the light modulating device is used for performing image modulation on the primary light and the supplementary light so as to generate projection light required by the image to be displayed.
